Book review: Why are you still sending your kids to school?

As a parent coach and trainer, I’m used to meeting doubts, fears and prejudice when it comes to children’s capacity to self-direct their own learning. Really? Do kids actually have the discipline to learn everything they need to when they’re ready for it?

Being programmed by our own schooling experience to believe that it’s only possible to learn through the direction and teaching of an adult, this can be hard to digest. And combined with the pressure society places on our children in today’s world: what to learn, how, when, where, homework, exams, diplomas, future possibilities etc., most parents have lost touch with what real, authentic learning looks like.

Blake Boles’ book Why are you still sending your kids to school? is The Answer to all the questions parents have about their children’s possibilities if they opt for self-directed education.

Boles has created a masterpiece with an appealing mix of self-lived experiences, other people’s stories, examples of what SDE can look like, how the future can develop for self-directed young adults and fact based research.

Boles explains what self-directed education is all about, goes through examples, the common fears but also brings up critical views, making this book highly balanced. I think it’s a must read not only for any parent who is considering self-directed education for their children, but actually also for parents who haven’t ever considered it.

Why are you still sending your kids to school? clears doubts, creates clarity and is a stimulating reading experience, to say the least. My expectations were high, and the book delivered even more than I had expected. This is the book all parents I know have been waiting for.
